GARDENING CLUB

The Gardening Club welcomes new people with a little or a lot of gardening know-how; if you'd like to try it, drop in and see what it's like - if you'd like to come again, it's only £1 per session.

Background History

The Club, formed in April 2010 and run by Carolyn Brightwater, is a sociable, skill-sharing, veg-sharing, digging, weeding, cooking and eating session that runs at the community allotment, South Street between 2.00 - 4.00 p.m. on a Thursday.
A second allotment came under the care of Carolyn and the Gardening Club during Autumn 2010. The extra space has provided room to experiment and take ownership of the new plot.
During April/May 2011 Working Days, volunteers erected a polytunnel on the original plot. This provides space for growing seeds and potting on. It also provides shelter, and allows the Gardening Club to meet at the Community Allotment whatever the weather!
As well as growing and picking produce, the Club regulars enjoy cooking, both on site using a small camping stove, and also at Local Food Links, where workshops were set up to learn exciting new recipes for seasonal vegetables.

The Gardening Club has gratefully received grant funding towards the purchase of a shed and tools, and to support the work of the Gardening Club co-ordinator, from the following:

• 2009 and 2010 - Community Foundation for Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset - Grassroots Grant
• 2010 and 2011 - Partnerships for Older People Projects (POPP)
• 2011 - the Co-operative Membership Community Fund

POPP funded workshops 2012
No.3 : 12th January - Seed Saving Workshop. Seed saving session on the allotment, using seed collected the previous year, prior to the seed swap and plant stall at Potato Day (14th January).

On the allotment: onions, garlic, shallots, broad beans, rhubarb and radicchio are all growing well.
